Think Tank

Thinking in Code

I've spent the past 10 years mastering HTML, and CSS.... to the point where I can think it and write it without having to look things up all the time. You can learn HTML and CSS in a couple weeks (see w3schools), but it will probably take you several years to develop some mastery and depth. Just like learning French, German, Latin or Greek.

Lately, I've become somewhat of a computer language polyglot. You can follow some of our thought process in the new Instant Expert Guides. It will be a helpful series of How To's and Quick Reference Cards ... starting with the new Computer Language Reference and the Synoptic Computer Language - Quick Reference ... IX Publishing will be developing more Instant Expert Guides in the coming months.

I can think in Rebol, and I'm learning to think in Perl, Python, PHP, Java, and JavaScript. I've written programs in each of these languages over the past 10 or 12 years, but .... as Bruce Eckels points out in Thinking in Java ... there's a difference between being able to write programs, and being able to think in a language.
